Staff Pick: Fable by Adrienne Young

TitleFable
Author: Adrienne Young
NarratorsEmma Lysy

As a millennial who grew up obsessing over The Pirates of the Caribbean (and all the sequels), I’ve always had a fascination with ships, pirates, lost treasure, and the open sea. Jump to the present — I’m all “grown up” and still can’t say no to a good book about an adventure at sea. Enter Fable by Adrienne Young.

Fable follows a spunky, clever, and underestimated teenager aptly named Fable. We meet her a few years after her father abandoned her on an island of thieves just after their family ship had sunk, killing her mother. Fable bargains with West, a local trader, to gain passage to The Narrows on his ship, the Marigold, so she can reunite with her father. It turns out that it’s not as simple as that, since West isn’t exactly who she thought he was.

If you find it hard to get into a book right away, don’t worry, that is not an issue for Fable. This young adult fantasy audiobook immediately pulled me in with the immersive writing and before I knew it I felt as if I were standing aboard the Marigold listening to the crashing waves.

Emma Lysy creates the perfect picture through her narration for how I viewed Fable. She’s matter-of-fact, bold, and determined, which is the exact type of heroine I’d like to look up to as a young adult.

Need I say more? Well, if you need any other reason to pick up this adventurous listen, Fable was selected as the October pick for Reese’s new YA book club! So, there’s bound to be lots of talk about this book over the next while. Plus, it’s a duology, so there’s more to come and I for one can’t wait to hear what’s next for fearless Fable.

Publisher Summary:

Filled with all of the action, emotion, and lyrical writing that brought readers to Sky in the Deep, New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young returns with Fable, the first audiobook in this new captivating duology.

Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men.

As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home seventeen-year-old Fable has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive.

Fable takes you on a spectacular journey filled with romance, intrigue and adventure.

Book Clubbin’: 8 Discussion Questions for ‘The Lions of Fifth Avenue’ by Fiona Davis

Welcome to our monthly blog feature, Book Clubbin’! With some people back in the office, and others still at home, it’s important to keep busy and stay connected! Why not reach out to your bookish friends and see if they want to start a virtual book club or, if your area permits, a backyard book club (with social distancing in place, of course).

Let’s face it, it’s hard to find time to sit down and read these days! We’ve got work, commuting, chores, kids, and so many other things to worry about. That’s when audiobooks come in handy! Just pop on some headphones, press play, and you’ll be the CEO of multi-tasking in a flash!

This month our Book Clubbin’ pick is The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis, narrated by Erin Bennet and Lisa Flanagan. Davis is known for her bestselling historical fiction releases such as The Address and The Chelsea Girls. Her latest release, The Lions of Fifth Avenue, is already garnering buzz, as it was chosen as Good Morning America’s August book club pick. This listen follows Laura Lyons in 1913 as she heads to journalism school, and when valuable books are stolen from the New York Public Library, she gets sucked into the scandal.

Then, we jump forward 80 years to follow Sadie Donovan, Laura’s grand daughter, as she starts her new role at the New York Public Library. When items from the exhibit she was working on begin to go missing, Sadie is faced with unwelcome truths about her own family history.

This month’s pick is perfect for historical fiction fans and book lovers. This story will have you fully immersed. If you’re ready to start discussing The Lions of Fifth Avenue with your book club, get started with the questions below. Beware— SPOILERS ahead.

—————MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!————

1) Attending the Heterodoxy club changes Laura’s outlook on her life. Are there clubs similar to this that exist today?

2) What is your opinion on how Laura reacts when she finds out who has been stealing books from the library?

3) At the beginning of the book, Laura fills the traditional role of housewife and mother, but she wants to add “student” to the mix. She is met with resistance from her husband when she expresses her intentions. Do you think this still happens today, where woman are expected to fulfill traditionally “female” roles in their households?

4) In both time periods, priceless books go missing from the New York Public Library. Do you think that history will always repeat itself?

5) The library is very important to the story, as well as to both protagonists. What do libraries mean to you? Why are they an important space in our communities?

6) Laura takes the brunt of the blame for the events that transpired. If the roles weren’t so traditional in her home with Josh, do you think that her response and willingness to accept the blame would be different?

7) When Sadie finds out the truth about her grandmother, how does this change her?

8) Do you agree with the punishment that was given to the book thief? What do you think would be a suitable punishment for theft of these priceless items?

Staff Pick: The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

Title: The Only Good Indians
Author: Stephen Graham Jones
Narrator: Shaun Taylor-Corbett

As a big fan of all things horror, I’m always on the hunt for an audiobook with a new and interesting story. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good haunted house tale as much as anyone, but sometimes I just need something fresh and exciting, something different.

When I read the description of The Only Good Indians it described the author as “the Jordan Peele of horror literature,” and I was immediately sold. After watching Get Out and Us too many times, I was itching for more, so this new listen from Stephen Graham Jones couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Only Good Indians starts off by following Lewis, a 30-year-old Blackfeet living with his wife, Petra. We get to see the ins and outs of his life while also hearing his inner monologue, which pulls you right into the story. While inside Lewis’ head, we also get glimpses of a past elk hunting trip where something not quite right transpired, as he is currently being haunted by one of the elk that he killed.

As the story builds, the suspense is next-level and I was dying to reach the moment of clarity where we can truly know what the truth is. And the wait was well worth it, trust me.

This audiobook wouldn’t have been the same without the narration from Shaun Taylor-Corbett. His voice is so easy to listen to and convincing, it really feels like you’re inside Lewis’ mind. And having previously provided narration for There There by Tommy Orange, a huge hit in 2018, it’s a given that Taylor-Corbett can convey a story.

This is not your typical horror audiobook, so if you’re on the hunt for something that will keep you immersed, keep you guessing, and keep you on the edge of your seat, then you should definitely line up The Only Good Indians as your next listen.

Publisher Summary:

A tale of revenge, cultural identity, and the cost of breaking from tradition in this latest novel from the Jordan Peele of horror literature, Stephen Graham Jones.

Seamlessly blending classic horror and a dramatic narrative with sharp social commentary, The Only Good Indians follows four American Indian men after a disturbing event from their youth puts them in a desperate struggle for their lives. Tracked by an entity bent on revenge, these childhood friends are helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a violent, vengeful way.
