What’s in a Name? 7 Authors Who Use Pseudonyms

There’s nothing more intriguing and mysterious than the pseudonym. Why do authors use them? There’s no real cut and dry answer to this and their reasoning could be anything from wanting to break into a new genre to hiding from the law! Whether you call it a pen name, pseudonym, or nom de plume, these authors have mastered the art of distinguishing themselves as multiple people and finding success in (sometimes) countless aliases.

Jayne Castle, AKA: Amanda Quick and Jayne Ann Krentz

Jayne Castle is a New York Times bestselling author of over 120 titles. Castle writes under her maiden name (Castle), married name (Krentz), and a pen name (Quick). She pens her contemporary romance-suspense novels under her married name, Jayne Ann Krentz, while her futuristic romance-suspense titles are written under her maiden name, Jayne Castle. Finally, her historical romance-suspense novels are written as Amanda Quick. Most recently, Quick released Tightrope, a story of an unconventional woman and a man shrouded in mystery racing against a killer.

Nora Roberts, AKA: J. D. Robb

J. D. Robb is the author of the In Death series, in which every release has been a New York Times bestseller. Robb was created by Nora Roberts by taking the first letters of her sons’ names (Jason and Dan) and combining it with a shortened form of Roberts to make J. D. Robb. Everyone’s favorite cop, Eve Dallas, and her billionaire husband return in Robb’s 59th book in the In Death series, Connections in Death.

J. K. Rowling, AKA: Robert Galbraith

J. K. Rowling is undoubtedly a household name and after her hugely successful Harry Potter series, which is actually the best-selling book series in history (whoa!), Rowling wanted to branch out. In 2013, she released The Cuckoo’s Calling under the moniker, Robert Galbraith. Since this first detective novel in the Cormoran Strike series, she has released three more titles – The Silkworm, Career of Evil, and, most recently, Lethal White.

Daniel Handler, AKA: Lemony Snicket

Lemony Snicket is an interesting character! Not only is he the author and narrator of the best-selling children’s novels, A Series of Unfortunate Events, but he is also a character in the books with an intimate connection to the three main characters’ mother, Beatrice. Plus, did we mention that Lemony Snicket, the author, is actually a pseudonym created by Daniel Handler? Yes, this man of mystery has published titles under both names, but it is the 13 Series of Unfortunate Events titles that rocketed him to stardom and resulted in a feature film in 2004 and a Netflix adaptation released in 2017.

Stephen King, AKA: Richard Bachman

You can’t think about horror without Stephen King coming to mind. At the beginning of his career, it was suggested that he only release one book a year, thus his pen name, Richard Bachman, was born. Under the Bachman name, King published five novels before being outed in 1985. After this, two more novels were released in 1996 and 2007 after being discovered in the papers “left behind” by Bachman. King still draws on Bachman for inspiration every now and then, especially in his 2016 novel, The Dark Half, in which a writer’s pseudonym takes on a life of its own and is hellbent on destroying everything in pursuit of its creator.

Anne Rice, AKA: A. N. Roquelaure and Anne Rampling

Anne Rice is, of course, known for her Vampire Chronicles series, which follows the character of Lestat. Interview with the Vampire, Rice’s debut novel and the first installment of The Vampire Chronicles series was adapted to a feature film in 1994 starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Rice branched out into erotic fiction under the names Anne Rampling and A. N. Roquelaure. Roquelaure’s bibliography boasts The Sleeping Beauty Quartet, with the most recent release of Beauty’s Kingdom in 2015, set 20 years after Beauty’s Release.

Michael Crichton, AKA: John Lange, Jeffery Hudson, and Michael Douglas

Best known for his best-selling science-fiction novel, Jurassic Park, which was later made into a hit blockbuster movie, John Michael Crichton hasn’t always gone by Michael Crichton. At the start of his writing career he was still in medical school and didn’t want his writing to affect this – which lead to the creation of John Lange. Under this pen name, he released eight titles, the latest being Binary (1972). Prior to adopting his final nom de plume, Michael Chrichton, he also released a novel with his brother titled, Dealing, under the name Michael Douglas (both of their first names) and a medical thriller titled A Case of Need under the name, Jeffery Hudson.

STAFF PICK: Star Wars: Queen’s Shadow

Post by Jennifer Joudrey

Title: Star Wars: Queen’s Shadow
Author: E.K. Johnston
Narrator: Catherine Taber

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away…

Star Wars fans are familiar with the legendary story of Luke Skywalker and how he used to bullseye womp rats back on Tatooine, leading him to successfully bring down the Death Star, or how about the unforgettable tale of the Millenium Falcon? It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. These stories are heavily embedded in Star Wars lore, but what about some of the unknown stories?

In Star Wars: Queen’s Shadow we are reunited with Padmé Naberrie, formerly the Queen of Naboo. Now leaving her nobility behind, she finds herself in the middle of the chaotic and dangerous Galactic Senate on the planet of Coruscant. As Queen, Padmé was always so certain of her actions, but as a Senator everything is new. Trying to maneuver her way through the volatile political climate proves challenging as she learns who she can trust and who she cannot.

The narrator Catherine Taber delivers the action-packed book in an energetic and exciting manner. Listeners familiar with the Star Wars saga will enjoy this movie-like audio experience. This book is full of characters that are well-known in the Star Wars universe, and she gives each character a dynamic presence in audio form. Through her tone, the listener can hear both the strength of Padmé as a character who successfully defended her home planet of Naboo from invasion, and her vulnerability as a new Senator attempting to navigate an ever changing political environment.

This is E.K. Johnston’s second Star Wars novel. Similar to her previous novel, Johnston was able to provide more background and history to a character that has such an important role in the fandom that Star Wars fans know and love. She has provided us with a detailed account of the struggles that Padmé faced entering the Galactic Senate because of factors such as her age, gender, and inexperience. There has been a lot of debate recently regarding the way that female characters are portrayed in the media, and Johnston’s portrayal of Padmé shows strength and determination in the face of adversity. Writing a book about such a pivotal character could be a daunting task, however, Johnston effectively bridges what we know about Padmé’s past and future in an exciting read.

Listening to a Star Wars audiobook will be a game-changer for any fan of the movies. I cannot recommend them enough. Other amazing titles to check out would be:
Star Wars Ahsoka, Phasma, and Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi Leia, Princess of Alderaan.

Publisher Summary:

Written by the #1 New York Times best-selling author of Star Wars Ahsoka!

When Padmé Naberrie, ‘Queen Amidala’ of Naboo, steps down from her position, she is asked by the newly-elected queen to become Naboo’s representative in the Galactic Senate. Padmé is unsure about taking on the new role, but cannot turn down the request to serve her people. Together with her most loyal handmaidens, Padmé must figure out how to navigate the treacherous waters of politics and forge a new identity beyond the queen’s shadow.

Fiction:

Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, narrated by Roy Dotrice

Publisher Summary:

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, Narrated by Cassandra Campbell

Publisher Summary:

For years, rumors of the ‘Marsh Girl’ have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Life Will Be the Death of Me:…and You Too! by Chelsea Handler, narrated by Chelsea Handler

Publisher Summary:

In a haze of vape smoke on a rare windy night in L.A. in the fall of 2016, Chelsea Handler daydreams about what life will be like with a woman in the White House. And then Donald Trump happens. In a torpor of despair, she decides that she’s had enough of the privileged bubble she’s lived in—a bubble within a bubble—and that it’s time to make some changes, both in her personal life and in the world at large.

At home, she embarks on a year of self-sufficiency—learning how to work the remote, how to pick up dog shit, where to find the toaster. She meets her match in an earnest, brainy psychiatrist and enters into therapy, prepared to do the heavy lifting required to look within and make sense of a childhood marked by love and loss and to figure out why people are afraid of her. She becomes politically active—finding her voice as an advocate for change, having difficult conversations, and energizing her base. In the process, she develops a healthy fixation on Special Counsel Robert Mueller and, through unflinching self-reflection and psychological excavation, unearths some glittering truths that light up the road ahead.

Thrillingly honest, insightful, and deeply, darkly funny, Chelsea Handler’s memoir keeps readers laughing, even as it inspires us to look within and ask ourselves what really matters in our own lives.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck by Mark Manson, narrated by Roger Wayne

Publisher Summary:

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be ‘positive’ all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. ‘F**k positivity,’ Mark Manson says. ‘Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it.’ In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—’not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault.’ Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

The King’s (and Queen’s!) Speech: A Majesty of Narrators!

If you’re a fan of British royal family-themed fiction, then almost certainly you’re a fan of two things: The Crown on Netflix, and Philippa Gregory. Out now is a new audio version of The Queen’s Fool, narrated by Yolanda Kettle, which follows The Other Boleyn Girl, narrated by Vanessa Kirby. Both Kettle and Kirby have been *spoiler alert* recent love rivals in The Crown, which got us to thinking, which other books have been narrated by The Crown stars? Let’s take a look!

The Queen’s Fool by Philippa Gregory, narrated by Yolanda Kettle

Philippa Gregory does it again!

Hannah Green is a young girl who is placed in the Tudor court as a holy fool to Mary I. Hannah, who has many of her own secrets, ends up trapped between the Catholic Queen and Elizabeth, her Protestant sister. She must choose between living a safe life of a commoner or risking everything for the fame and fortune of the court.

Yolanda Kettle’s narration really brings Hannah’s character to life. She has a very youthful voice, which is very apt for the characters in this novel.

Publisher’s Summary:

Winter, 1553. Pursued by the Inquisition, Hannah Green, a fourteen-year-old Jewish girl, is forced to flee with her father from their home in Spain. But Hannah is no ordinary refugee; she has the gift of “Sight,” the ability to foresee the future, priceless in the troubled times of the Tudor court. Hannah is adopted by the glamorous Robert Dudley, the charismatic son of King Edward’s protector, who brings her to court as a “holy fool” for Queen Mary and, ultimately, Queen Elizabeth. Hired as a fool but working as a spy; promised in wedlock but in love with her master; endangered by the laws against heresy, treason, and witchcraft, Hannah must choose between the safe life of a commoner and the dangerous intrigues of the royal family that are inextricably bound up with her own yearnings and desires.

Teeming with vibrant period detail and peopled by characters seamlessly woven into the sweeping tapestry of history, The Queen’s Fool is a rich and emotionally resonant gem from a masterful storyteller.

Drama: An Actor’s Education by John Lithgow, narrated by John Lithgow

John Lithgow’s (Winston Churchill) memoir, which he narrates himself, is an absolute treat. He talks in depth about his life, his family, and his career, which has spanned decades and various genres. His stories about his parents are poignant and touching.

As I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, I love listening to authors narrating their own memoirs, since it adds real depth to the story being told. And of course, an actor with such gravitas as Lithgow brings much richness to the narration.

Publisher’s Summary:

Emmy Award-winner John Lithgow presents a charming, witty, and revealing memoir about his family, his work, and his life in Drama—an intimate story of insights and inspirational reflections from one of America’s most beloved actors. Pet Sematary by Stephen King, narrated by Michael C. Hall

If you had to pick an author who really symbolizes everything great about the horror genre, most of us would pick Stephen King.

Pet Sematary is a horror classic, centered around the character Louis Creed, who moves his family to a lovely small town that seems too good to be true.

Michael C. Hall (John F. Kennedy) is very compelling and right on the money as narrator for this book. With his background in thrillers in TV shows like Dexter, he brings a great presence to this listen.

Publisher’s Summary:

When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job, and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Yet despite Ludlow’s tranquility, there’s an undercurrent of danger that lingers…like the graveyard in the woods near the Creed’s home, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets.

STAFF PICK: Leadershift by John C. Maxwell

Title: Leadershift
Author: John C. Maxwell
Narrator: John C. Maxwell
Bonus Content Narrators: Rachel HollisTrent SheltonEd Bastian

This one is for all the leaders out there—that does not just entail anyone who runs a company or works in a management position. You may be a leader at home, or among your colleagues. This audiobook really spoke to me about being an effective leader and the strategies to adopt in order to enhance your organization or personal growth. After all, as John mentions, “Everything rises and falls on leadership”.

John C. Maxwell teaches his readers how to shift their leadership style to keep transforming, improving, and influencing others. He uses his own examples and personal stories from his own leadership journey and provides you with practical advice on how to shift your leadership style and how to implement these 11 steps in your daily life. Each step requires you to change your thought process and actions which will ultimately lead you to be successful in a fast-paced world that is constantly evolving. You need to be a role model before you can expect change from others. After all, positive behavior is contagious and people will want to follow in those footsteps once they see positive changes in your leadership style.

John narrates this audiobook himself which engages you with his strong, encouraging, and confident voice. His narrating style is speaking to you as a friend, giving you tips on how to improve your leadership skills. He is such a genuine person and it really comes across at the end of the chapters when he has a little giggle and even tells you at points how much he loves narrating his books. The bonus features from a conference with Rachel Hollis, Trent Shelton and Ed Bastian were a nice added touch to learn from some of his “students” he has teamed up with who he has mentored in one way or another.

John C. Maxwell is very passionate about sharing his knowledge about leadership and giving us the tools we need to be more successful in how we manage situations in a leadership role. He is such a great leader and really makes you want to learn from his wealth of knowledge on the topic.

I personally strive to be a better leader in a lot of aspects in my life, especially in a work environment. This book has just added so many more tools in my toolbox and I cannot wait to listen to more of his audiobooks. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is currently in a leadership role or to anyone who wants to become a leader in the future or at home. Do not forget, “Tomorrow is ours to win or lose” – John C. Maxwell. If you enjoyed this book, you will also want to check out his other books, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, No Limits, and Developing the Leader Within You 2.0.

Change happens so rapidly today that leaders must be nimble and ready to adapt. Otherwise, they won’t survive. International leadership expert John Maxwell says, the key is to learn how to “leadershift.”

In Leadershift, John C. Maxwell helps listeners make leadership changes that will positively enhance their organizational and personal growth. He does this by sharing the 11 shifts he made over the course of his long and successful leadership career. Each shift changed his trajectory and set him up for new and exciting achievements, strengthening and sustaining his leadership abilities and making him the admired leadership expert he is today.

Among those leadershifts are “the Adaptive Shift from Plan A to Option A,” “the Production Shift from Ladder Climbing to Ladder Building,” and “the Influence Shift from Positional Authority to Moral Authority.” Maxwell gives specific guidance about how to make these shifts in their own lives. Each one requires them to change the way they think, act, and ultimately lead so they can be successful in a world that never remains the same.
